I am writing to thank you all for your wonderful and most generous donation to Children’s Cancer Institute through the launch of the Australian Fairy Poems book. It’s such a gorgeous book, it will be put in our reception area for our staff and guests to read.
Since the early 1960’s when childhood cancer was almost uniformly fatal, survival rates for this disease have improved dramatically. Now, over 70% of children with cancer are cured of their disease.
For many children diagnosed with high-risk malignancies, however, there is still a very significant likelihood that their treatment will be unsuccessful, and sadly they will relapse and die of their disease. To provide new hope for these children, and to significantly increase the overall survival rates for childhood cancer, new approaches to treatment are urgently needed.
Your gift comes at a crucial time, as we have recently launched a very exciting project in personalised medicine which we hope will have significant scope to improve survival rate.
The “one size fits all” approach to treating children with cancer does not work for many, but a more personalised approach to treatment can significantly improve outcomes. Personalised treatment strategies can be tailored specifically to each patient, incorporating those drugs that have the greatest likelihood of successfully treating that child’s cancer.
Working in partnership with clinicians at Sydney Children’s Hospital Network (Randwick and Westmead) and the John Hunter Hospital Newcastle, we plan to pioneer this exciting world-class research in tailored therapeutics, which heralds a new and extremely exciting era in childhood cancer treatment.
Thanks to people just like you and your friends, we’ve made great progress. But we won’t stop until the job is done. And we’re so glad to have you all by our side. Curing childhood cancer – it’s not if, it’s when.
