That’s the message from the commander of the Orana Mid-Western Police District, Peter McKenna after a police woman was assaulted in Mudgee.
Shortly after 3.30am on Sunday, January 14, officers were patrolling Horatio Street and stopped a Holden Commodore with three people on board. During the stop, police searched the vehicle, allegedly located prohibited drugs and items unlawfully obtained.
The occupants exited the vehicle on request, and police conducted a number of checks. The passenger, a 36-year-old man ran to the driver’s side door of the vehicle. As police tried to stop the man, he has allegedly struck the police woman on the hand before driving off, dragging the officer for approximately five metres.
The female officer sustained minor bruising and swelling to her hand. The male officer sustained an arm injury.
Superintendent McKenna said both officers are fine and back at work, but he has a blunt message for anyone caught attacking an officer.
“Assaulting a police officer, especially an unprovoked assault on a person in uniform, is never acceptable,” he said. “People who behave in that manner will find themselves arrested, charged, fingerprinted, photographed, and going before a court.
“We will stay very firm on that type of action.
“Make no mistake, they are human beings underneath that blue shirt, they are just doing an extraordinary job.”
Officers from Orana Mid-Western Police District have commenced investigations into the incident. Anyone with information or who was in the vicinity at the time of the incident is urged to contact police.
