After fielding stacks of competitors at their own inter-club event in November, half a dozen red racers turned up to Cowra on Sunday and made their presence felt when it counted most.

These six racers will likely visit Bathurst on Friday for the third inter-club race of the season, as the blue and golds will host their annual Australia Day event.

Red Devils president Matt Webster reigned supreme at Cowra, as the powerhouse president has made it a happy hunting ground in the last two years.

The long-time triathlete has started the 2017-18 season with a bang as he finished second at the Mudgee event and took out Cowra’s in comprehensive fashion.

“I just made sure I did enough for the win,” Webster said.

“I just had to stay ahead of Mark Windsor who’s a really good cyclist.

“He almost caught me on the bike but not quite so I still had a bit of a lead coming into that final run leg.”

Perhaps overshadowing Webster’s run was an excellent performance from Giselle Denley who narrowly missed third place, turning in her best result to date.

“She deserved that result,” Webster said.

“She’s been cycling really well and putting a lot of hard yards into training.

The Red Devils will now turn their attention to Friday where Bathurst’s event is expected to attract some of the best athletes in the state.

Mudgee inter-club winner Nick North is a likely competitor for January 26 and will enter the main event as an odds-on favourite.

“He’s definitely the man to watch,” Webster said.

“He’s super quick and I think he’s improved his run a bit as well.

Mudgee trails Bathurst and Orange in the overall standings as the committee decided to award more points to less populated clubs, giving the smaller contingents more of a fair go.

With that being said, The Red Devils’ campaign has been strong so far and you can expect that to continue as we near the end of the season.
