Former engineering student at TAFE NSW Mudgee, Austin Sanders, demonstrated tenacity and a will to overcome adversity when he didn’t let a sporting injury stop him from successfully completing the Mudgee Skills Centre program late last year.

Just a few weeks into his course, Mr Sanders participated in a one-off rugby league game which saw him break his leg. The injury meant he missed several TAFE classes and required modifications in the classroom to help him graduate from the program.
“I am very grateful for the support I received from the staff at TAFE NSW Mudgee and in particular my teacher Jim (James Mackin),” he said.
“He was flexible and made me feel comfortable considering the circumstances.
“I developed strong relationships with my teachers which made it a great learning environment and provided me with the motivation to keep going even though I had to elevate my leg for five weeks.”
TAFE NSW engineering teacher, James Mackin, said even though Austin faced a number of challenges throughout the project, he never complained and simply got on with the task at hand.
“We were able to modify Austin’s workstation and give him tasks to complete at home or with his employer,” Mr Mackin said.
“Austin created an impressive gold number vice which certainly stood out with his fellow classmates and the engineering trade alike.
“We wish him all the best in his position as a mechanical fitter at Glencore-Ulan West Operations.”
Enrolments are now open for over 1,200 courses across the state, including a broad range of engineering courses.
