The competition, formerly known as the Tablelands Flock Ewe Competition, is named in recognition and honour of the fantastic amount of effort and support that Chris Naake put into the competition over many years of involvement.
Mr Naake was the representative for Coopers Animal Health in the Central West. Coopers will continue their involvement as a major sponsor of the competition.
Organisers are currently calling for entries from sheep producers from across the region. The competition is conducted by the Mudgee Show Society.
The competition is aimed at providing Merino sheep producers with an informative two days focusing on the different breeding and management practices involved in Merino sheep and wool production across the region.
The competition will be split into two sections based on wool type:
- Superfine/fine – visual 70s quality count and finer.
- Medium/strong – visual 66s quality count and broader.
The competition judges will be empowered to move any flock deemed to be entered in the incorrect section.
In an effort to create added interest and discussion, the committee is requesting entrants to display a small group of five to 10 ewes that they believe most illustrates their breeding aims and objectives.
Interested people are encouraged to travel the circuit over the two days accompanying the judges as they assess the flocks on their individual properties.
Participants and interested people have the opportunity to speak with the judges throughout the two days gaining valuable information from the Judges knowledge. A presentation dinner will be held at Mudgee Golf Club on the evening of day two with place-getters announced.
