Emergency services were called to a property on the Lue Road,10-kilometres east of Mudgee at 12.50pm on Thursday.
Mudgee Officer-in-Charge Chief Inspector Jeff Boon said a small burn-off in a drum escaped to nearby grass and consequently set fire to two trucks parked nearby.
One of the trucks had tyres on the back that caused a thick, black smoke when they burned.
Police quickly closed the road in both directions because of the decreased visibility, while the NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW Fire and Rescue, HAZMAT teams and paramedics attempted to contain the blaze.
A man in his 70s and a man in his 50s were treated for smoke inhalation, a NSW Ambulance spokesperson said.
Crews had contained the blaze by 4pm on Thursday but remained on site to mop up.
The Lue Road was partially reopened to traffic late on Thursday afternoon, with traffic control alternating east and west directions.
A permit had been obtained for the fire and police were investigating to ensure all conditions were met.
Earlier: Detours are in place on the Lue Road about 5kms from Mudgee after reports of a grass fire resulting from a burning truck about 10kms from Mudgee near Mount Knowles.
If you’re travelling in that direction you’ll need to plan for a longer trip.
