Mudgee’s top tier pennants side captured its third consecutive title on Sunday just three years after breaking a 108-year drought.
In what developed as a bit of a grudge match, Josh Campbell’s men took out Dubbo’s squad after losing to it prior to the finals.
After Hale, Stanley and Campbell won their matches, they gave the call to Andrew Best who was hitting into the 18th.
“Besty was all square,” Mark Hale said.
“We were three up so we waved to him and he picked his ball up and threw it on the green and started jumping around.”
While Osborn didn’t win his match on Sunday, he did more than enough for his team in the lead up to the grand final.
“Ozzy leaked a bit of oil the old fella,” Hale laughed.
“He was four up with seven to go and got beaten on the last.
“40 years of pennants golf at Mudgee and that’s his first victory.”
When Hale’s kids called him after the match to find out the score, they were only interested in the performance of one bloke – and it wasn’t their dad.
“They called me and asked me how Ozzy went,” he laughed.
“My nephew texted me from the Hunter Valley and asked how he went too. No one cared about us – just Ozzy.”
After turning the tide on a century-long trend, Mark Hale doesn’t plan on losing a pennants season anytime soon.
“We didn’t win one for 108 years but if we stick together we might win the next 108,” Hale said.
“You never know. The boys are so united and it’s a really good squad.
“I can’t see anyone not playing next year.”
Hale has been a crucial member of the Mudgee pennants side since moving from the Hunter Valley and capped off an undefeated run with a win on Sunday.
Mudgee’s second division side made an appearance in the grand final too, but went down 4/1.
“It was a great effort from them regardless of the result,” he said.
Hale acknowledged the contribution of the Mudgee Golf Club and all the people who chipped in not only on the weekend, but throughout the course of the season.
“All of us had a caddie yesterday and that was great. The club has been so supportive,” he said.
“Wayne Tiggeman has driven the bus for us every week too. That’s been unreal.”
Pennants season might be over but there’s plenty of events on the horizon for Hale and company with the Mudgee championships set for the end of April.
“There’s always golf happening in the central west and even up in the Blue Mountains too. We’ll have plenty of golfers active in the next few months.”
