Around $24,000 was raised at the tenth annual car and motor-bike rally, which will go on to help local people battling cancer through Can Assist – Mudgee and Districts Branch. Who help to provide financial assistance, emotional and practical support, information, care and accommodation.
The fundraising event – hosted by Cudgegong Cruisers Inc and Can Assist volunteers – saw 139 vehicles take part, around 20 of which motorbikes and the rest cars and trucks. And headed for headed for lunch at Dunedoo before returning to Club Mudgee in the afternoon for the charity auction and entertainment.
Can Cruise coordinator Glenn Box said, “it was definitely our biggest one to date - our best result and the most people we’ve had involved as well”.
“We couldn’t have asked for it to go any better for our tenth event. And it’s a real credit to the Mudgee community that they get behind it and support it for so long,” he said.
“Everybody comes together and they make it happen, which is a hashtag and line I love to use ‘together we make it happen’. We can’t do it on our own so we’re extremely lucky to have that support.”
Rebecca Callaghan set out to raise $5000 for Can Assist by shaving her head on the day.
Through her social media and circle of friends and colleagues raised $4000 prior to the event. With the goal in sight she raised a further $1500 on Saturday and went under the clippers after the run.
And over $2000 was raised by ‘Larry the Leprechaun’ – the theme for this year’s event being it’s St Patrick’s Day date’, who was placed at businesses around town for the last five weeks and brought on the cruise.
This year saw the first presentation of the Ian Carter Memorial Award, named in honour of Mr Carter who passed away last year and helped found Can Cruise and the local Can Assist branch.
The award recognises a Cudgegong Cruisers club member who goes above and beyond in the running of the event. The first recipient was Jim Cottee, who was unable to accept it in person as he was still out on the road at the time assisting another participant’s broken-down vehicle.
