Five Launceston College students debated their way to victory at the weekend.  The college’s debating team took the prestigious Commonwealth Parliamentary Shield debating competition, marking the first time in its 38-year history that Launceston College has taken home the impressive title.  The competition is the end result of 10 weeks of hard debating and brings together the best teams from Northern government and non-government schools.   The final debate saw Launceston College face up against Launceston Church Grammar School.  The teams were asked to discuss the idea that social cohesion was more important than individual rights and given just one hour to prepare their arguments.  Team captain Phoebe Meyer, 18, argued for the negative team and said although it was a tricky topic, she enjoyed the challenge.  “I feel very lucky to have been with the team and to be supported by our coaches,” Phoebe said. “This is a really big deal for Launceston College.”
