Mr Metcalf, 61, first signed up with VERTO in 2008 but it’s only over the past 18 months that he’s fallen on tough times.
“It took a while but the girls have been great in helping me out. I’ve only been working there a few weeks but it’s a really good place to work and I’m enjoying being back at work,” Mr Metcalf said.
In 2013, Mr Metcalf was encouraged by local VERTO staff to take part in a Certificate III in Warehousing that would help him gain a qualification and give him something new to do with his days.
VERTO’s consultant Monique Kaleth said after Mr Metcalf completed the course, she began helping him look for work that would be suitable for his qualifications, previous experience and hobbies.
“We arranged an interview for him with one of our partners, Country Electronics, who were very happy with Gerry’s work,” she said.
With Gerry’s previous experience in welding and a knack for fixing small engines, Country Electronics were very happy to take him on board.
He began work on August 12 and will be assisting with the production on electric fencing systems and cattle prodders.
VERTO Chief Executive Officer, Ron Maxwell, said the outcome was a testament to the hard work of the Mudgee VERTO team and the strong relationships they have built with local businesses.
“We’re proud of Gerry’s story as it shows the power of VERTO’s combined services working together to make a difference in local communities,” he said.
