The grounds of Mudgee High – and in the morning the local streets – were awash with colour as Year 12 continued the Rainbow Day tradition of dedicating their second last day of school to raising money and spirits.

This year’s beneficiaries are the Mudgee District Hospital Maternity Unit and Mudgee PCYC.
Local motorists were the first contributors to Rainbow Day at the roadblocks on Church Street, Market Street, and the Ulan Road.
Festivities continued back at the school with a fete featuring carnival games and stalls, firstly for students from Cudgegong Valley and Mudgee public schools, then for Mudgee High schoolers during their lunch break.
The day concluded with the annual Year 12 concert where the year group show off their extra-curricular abilities.
Vice-captain Grace McLean said that being an MHS tradition, each Year 12 group takes pride in getting their opportunity to run the day.
“The kids have really been enjoying themselves and there’s just a really good vibe around it,” she said.
“It just seems a bit surreal that it’s finally our turn to do Rainbow Day, we’re used to going to other year groups’ ones so this is a bit different.
“But it’s really rewarding for us to be doing our own one though.”
School captain Jock Whiteside added that the day once again brought out plenty of generosity for an event which takes the whole of Year 12 to run.
“We’ve been really busy so it’s been really good, we’ve seen a lot of money come through because everyone is being really generous,” he said,
“Everyone [in the year group] is involved and working together, which is a bit of a one-off because you don’t get to do something that involves everyone in the year.”
On Thursday afternoon the money was tallied and the amount raised and a wrap up of Rainbow Day will be announced at the Year 12 final presentation assembly today.
However, Year 12 dedicate their entire final year of schooling to fundraising for their chosen causes and the students will continue collecting donations at events such as the A Day On The Green concert with their final total being announced at the formal.
Rainbow Day is the traditional last hurrah for Year 12 at Mudgee High as their Higher School Certificate (HSC) exams begin next term.
