Just because 2015 was the “off-year” in the biennial local Relay cycle, doesn’t mean that there wasn’t plenty going on behind the scenes.
Committee chairperson Christina Caughey said that all of this work before the calendar year in which the event is held, comes from a love the members have for it and their striving to continue to improve on it.
“This is the fourth event for most of the committee, and we all enjoy it so much and we’re all so passionate about it that we’re constantly looking for ways to make it bigger and better,” she said.
“This year we went to the Bathurst Relay and the mini-summit in Young to get ideas, and we held the Masquerade Ball last month as well.
“Because the last few Relays have been such great successes with the community coming on board that it really is becoming something that people in town really look forward to.
“Since the last Relay unfortunately many more people have been touched by cancer – whether it be someone they know or family member or friend – and that’s what the money raised to help fund treatment and research.”
After Christmas, the school holidays, New Year, Australia Day, and the heat of summer, expect preparations for the Relay to really ramp up.
Christina said that they’ll be “painting the town purple” next year, beginning with the official launch on Saturday, February 6, at the St John’s Markets.
The first team information night of 2016 will be at Club Mudgee, 6pm on Wednesday, February 17.
Two more info nights will be held on March 16 and April 20, ahead of the Relay itself on the weekend of April 30/May 1, at Victoria Park.
“February, March and April is when we really kick into gear,” she said.
The fundraising target for the 2016 Mudgee and District Relay For Life is $165,000.
