In the end however, it mattered little as the home side were romped by Parkes’ bowlers, Mudgee dismissed for 80 after being 7-20 at one stage.
It was always going to be tough going for a side missing some key players, as well as the fact that those picked usually strut their stuff in the under 19s competition.
In the end though they were beaten by a very solid Parkes outfit who recovered well after a shaky start with the bat, before ripping through Mudgee’s batting lineup to have the hosts reeling at the beginning of the second innings.
Toby Nash was the pick of the bowlers for Parkes, taking impressive figures of 5-18 off his eight overs.
Phil Dunford was also excellent with the ball for the visitors, taking 2-8 off six over, stopping the flow of runs from one end has his partner in crime Nash did the majority of the damage at the other end.
Mudgee selector Terry Ford said it was just one of those days for the home team.
“They bowled well but we have to learn to nut it out, It was just one of those days I think.”
“We had them 3-40 even though we hadn’t bowled well together in partnerships,” he said.
“Opportunities were there but we just let them get away unfortunately.
“We bowled too many wides - 39 all together so realistically there’s another 60 runs off the balls we had to re-bowl.
“At one stage they lost 8-67 but they had two batting partnerships that put on 80 each including Vince Umbers who made a well made 71.
“We had some catching chances that went just over the top and also one absolute dolly which was disappointing.”
On a pitch that was doing a lot however, the Parkes batsman had to work extremely hard to post a total of 247.
Although there were wickets falling a various moments in the visitors innings, they still managed to compile plenty of runs, mainly thanks to Vince Umbers (71), Mitch Cambourne (42) and Zac Bayliss (42).
Ford also credited the bowling and fielding display of the visiting side.
“They’re a very good sides Parkes, their batsman really had to work hard,” he said.
“They’re very disciplined in their bowling as well.
“They bowled well but we have to learn to nut it out, It was just one of those days I think.”
