For the month of October, National Breast Care Awareness Month, the Mudgee CBD will be dressed pink with banners, streamers in shopfronts and lighting. 

Mudgee Town Hall is one of several landmarks that will blush pink for the inaugural event.  

An initiative of the Mudgee Chamber of Commerce, the event will include special sporting days and a gala ball.

Chamber of Commerce committee member Andrew Palmer said the month-long spectacle is expected to attract national media. 

“We think it’s a good way to bring businesses together for a cause and we think the town will get a lot of national press as a result of it,” Mr Palmer said. 

One in eight women in Australia will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, that’s 16,000 newly diagnosed cases of breast cancer this year. 

In Mudgee there are currently 150 woman affected by the disease. 

In addition to raising awareness of breast cancer, the chamber is hoping to raise much needed funds for the McGrath Foundation that sponsors breast cancer care nurses across the country, including Mid-Western Region breast care nurse Diana Thomas. 

The event is not the first major breast cancer fundraising initiative for the community.

Last year, real estate agent Hugh Bateman raised $376,500 for the McGrath Foundation on a mammoth 2900 kilometre tractor trek across the state. 

Hugh has raised more than any other individual in the foundation’s ten year history.

His effort was enough to fund a new nurse in the Bankstown area. In his honor the position was named the McGrath Bateman Breast Care Nurse. Pink information packs have been delivered to local businesses for the pink month and the Chamber of Commerce is hoping all will take part to achieve complete coverage in every shop front.
