The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage has confirmed that The Greatest Wonder in the World and the American Tobacco Warehouse & Fancy Goods Emporium in Mayne Street will be added to the state’s heritage register.
Both buildings are currently being restored to create the Holtermann Museum, which will house historical photographs from the State Library’s Holtermann Collection, depicting Gulgong and other gold rush towns in 1872.
The Holtermann photographs of The Greatest Wonder in the World and The American Tobacco building were reproduced on Australia’s first $10 note, establishing Gulgong’s fame as “The Town on the Ten Dollar Note”.
Holtermann Museum Committee president Chris Pearson said the heritage listing would give weight to funding applications for the project.
“The application process was quite onerous,” he said. “To have a heritage listing, a building must have a connection to a person or event.
“This will give us a foot in the door for other funding.”
Restoration of the facade of the “Greatest Wonder” was completed in May and work has begun on the American Tobacco Warehouse.
The Museum Committee is seeking funding for stage two of the project, which will include remaining infrastructure including a theatrette.
If the funding application is successful, the Holtermann Museum could be open to the public by late 2017 or early 2018.
