Surf Lifesavers swapped patrol caps for the classroom to teach country kids about beach and water safety in the annual “Beach to Bush” program.
Surf Lifesaving volunteer Andy Cross and the team have been been visiting public schools during the week including Mudgee, Lue, Ulan and Wollar.
“Country kids are used to swimming in rivers and dams but it’s a different set of rules at the beach.
“Families visiting the beach over Summer need to remember to swim between the flags.
“Over 50 percent of rescues are of country kids and families that live more than 50 kms from the coast” he said.
Last year, 53 drowning deaths were recorded in NSW coastal waters.
