This year’s event had the biggest entrant number on record, with more than 240 vehicles competing over the weekend. Local spectator, Mick Radzievic, commented on the quality of the vehicles and the diversity “It’s good to see. There’s a lot of hard work and passion that people put into volunteering and into the vehicles here.”
The Clare brothers know all too well what goes into organising and competing in the event. Vice president and competitor, Guy Clare won the Naturally Aspirated, four or six cylinder category, while his younger brother achieved runner-up in the same event. Michael Stivala took out Best Overall Champion in his blue Ford XB Fairmont.
For a lot of entrants, Kandos is a good starting point to enter the Street Machine circuit, or as an opportunity to keep their passion alive and off the streets. Competitor and owner of Methrat, Harley Packham, said the event is “good for the family, plenty of things for the kids to do”.
Behind the scene, it’s a fast paced, well organised event. Pete Casani, long term member of the Street Machine Club, said each year they “nail it every time. For a small club that’s a non-for-profit organisation, that’s pretty impressive.”
Many local businesses and organisations benefit from the thousands of people the event brings to town, particularly those who volunteer for the club during the event. All groups who volunteer for the weekend receive a generous donation from the club for their hard work and dedication.
Overall, the organisers were happy with the behaviour of the crowds and competitors. Police presence was heavy during the weekend, but security and organisers remained vigilant, quickly removing anyone causing a disturbance.
Ultimately, it’s the passion for the Kandos Street Machine Club and the appreciation from the community that keeps the members and volunteers coming back. Visit their Facebook page Kandos Street Machine and Hot Rod Show.
