Whoops, an alleged ‘scammer’ has called the Mudgee police station by accident. The Mudgee Local Area Command posted the incident to their Facebook page on Friday, April 7 to warn others of the scam. The post started “While I was sitting at my desk this morning I took a phone call from a lady who claimed to be from an insurance company. Apparently I had been involved in an accident.” Clearly, police were onto the scam with the post continuing “BUGGER!!! I won’t be allowed back out on the road any more if I had an accident while I was driving my desk.” “The lady was very polite and informed me that she would help me with my accident claim as I was at fault. HOW LUCKY AM I? Maybe the Boss won’t find out. And she would make sure I didn’t have to pay for the damage to the other car. YOU BEAUTY!!!! And I only had to pay a small fee which I could deposit straight away because to save me time and trouble I could give her my bank account details and she would take care of it. Is THAT INCREDIBLY KIND OR WHAT?” The police officer started to quiz the caller “As a trained investigator I got a little suspicious. What accident? The one I had of course. When? Apparently she is not sure but sometime in the last three years. I may be getting on a bit but you’d think I’d remember a little thing like a car accident.” “She was ringing from Sydney. Why is the area code 08? Silence. What is the area code for Sydney? More silence. What is my name? The silence is becoming deafening.” “AN ANSWER AT LAST. No it’s not David. Where was the accident? Near Sydney. Car rego number? She can’t give that out for privacy reasons.” “When I told her she had rang a Police Station, I am a Police Officer and I was sitting at my desk the lady decided I was lying to her as this was a residential number. It sometimes feels like I live here but she just wouldn’t believe me. “HOW DARE I LIE TO THIS NICE LADY!!!!!!! I must have upset her because she hung up on me. OOPS!! “A quick check on Google showed the number is from Perth and there are multiple complaints about this scam. That of cause does not mean the call centre is based in Perth. It may have been a humorous mistake but police took the chance to warn others. “If a helpful person calls and cannot give you specific details – it is most likely a scam. Do not tell them anything – not your name – not your phone number – not your date of birth – not your address – not your email details – NOTHING!!!!! They should know already. Ask questions. If you have any doubts at all – HANG UP.” If you believe you are being scammed call police or report the incident to scamwatch.gov.au
