Police were called to the school on Wednesday, May 10 following an assault on a student in the playground. The alleged offender is a 14 year old student, that was suspended at the time of the incident.
It has been alleged the teenager assaulted the student by punching him in the head a number of times, while other students watched on.
The youth has been charged with several offences including assault, custody of a knife and trespass. He was refused bail before appearing at the Dubbo Children's Court.
Social media users have been quick to congratulate the school for taking swift action against the accused youth.
“No matter the age. People need to be held accountable for their actions,” one person commented.
Another agreed “Good job, violence against anyone should not be tolerated, no matter what age.”
“Parents send there (sic) kids to school to learn and grow but most of all to be safe,” another user said.
“It shows that Mudgee is not going to stand for bullies and the court agrees,” the comments continued.
Students that witnessed the incident are now being offered assistance. Mudgee High will hold anti-bullying sessions, to focus on identifying a bully and understanding what powers students have to combat an offender.
