Narromine and Dubbo Kangaroos were the Central West Rugby Union’s most dominant clubs in the late noughties, the former claimed the 2009 Blowes Clothing Cup and hosted the next two grand finals as well.
That era of Gorillas is routinely brought up among conversations regarding CWRU’s best sides through history.
That’s why the disappointment in rugby circles was palpable when the club began to struggle and ultimately moved down the GrainCorp Cup in 2017.
Narromine’s player shortage was no secret, but this year’s shift seems to have given the Gorillas a new lease on rugby life.
It’s been an undeniable success so far, sparking a player boom and acting as the catalyst for a number of former stars to return to the playing paddock.
As a result, Narromine has dominated so far this season, going through the first four rounds of the GrainCorp Cup’s Northern Division undefeated and for the most part, untroubled.
The most recent of those wins came over reigning premiers Trangie last weekend, Narromine piled on 33 unanswered, second half points to win 47-3 and assume title favouritism at the same time.
It was 0-0 after 20 minutes before the Tigers blinked and Narromine led 14-3 at half-time, before a second half onslaught.
It’s not surprising though, considering the formidable side the Gorillas turned out – particularly their bench.
Seven of Narromine’s 2009 Blowes Clothing Cup-winning side played against Trangie last weekend, with former NSW Country Cockatoo Luke Brown, former Shute Shield star Lachie McCutcheon and premiership-winning halfback Ryan Pratten all running from the pine.
There’s arguments Narromine’s is the strongest bench across the entire region, not just the GrainCorp Cup.
Narromine has also trumped Wellington (26-10), Geurie (51-26) and Coolah (38-0).
Narromine will look to continue its winning run on Saturday against Wellington, a side which claimed its first win of the season over Coolah last weekend.
