The fire burned about two hectares and in doing so a shed was destroyed. LPG bottles and fuel tanks were also in the fire along with hundreds of railway sleepers.

Nine RFS appliances attended the scene from brigades Rylstone, Mudgee HQ, Lue, Ilford, Running Stream and Clandulla, as well as Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters from Kandos station.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Cudgegong RFS District Superintendent Troy Porter said that the strong winds experienced in the region during the week were also a factor in fighting the blaze.

“At the time it was blowing at about 50km/h, we were lucky in that it was in an area that was a bit protected so it could’ve been a lot worse, but it did cause some trouble,” he said.

The windy weather of late is on top of dry conditions created by little rain over winter.

The Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC have said this year's bushfire season has the potential to be worse than usual in parts of NSW in their outlook.

The state as a whole registered its driest winter in 15 years and the ninth driest on record and there are no strong indications from climate models that temperatures or rainfall will stray far from average during spring.
