Time to get fire season ready

Rural Fire Service brigades across the Mid-Western Region have planned a number of Get Ready Weekend events from Friday through Sunday to remind you that it’s time now to prepare your families, homes and properties for a summer predicted to pose serious bush fire threats.

“We’re looking at a summer that’s expected to be hotter and dryer than normal,” said Superintendent Troy Porter of the New South Wales Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) Cudgegong District, which covers the Mid-Western Region.

“Coming off the warmest winter in Australian history our Bush Fire Danger Period started in September this year, a month earlier than normal, and even though the Danger Period is barely under way we’re already seeing a large number of fires. In August, New South Wales saw more than 2,300 fires indicating how dry the landscape is, how easily fires are starting and how quickly they’re spreading.

“That’s why it’s so important for you to get your family, your home and your property ready now,” Superintendent Porter said.

Get Ready Weekend is an opportunity for residents to prepare for bush fire before it is too late.

It is as simple as 1-2-3-4-5:

  1. TRIM - overhanging trees and shrubs
  2. MOW - your lawn and remove all the cut grass
  3. REMOVE - material that can burn around your home
  4. CLEAR - and remove all the debris and leaves from your home’s gutters
  5. PREPARE - a hose or hoses that can stretch all around the house

“Little things you do now can make a big difference during a bush fire,” Superintendent Porter said.

“Getting ready for the bush fire season is easier than you think.”
