While it hasn’t been as smooth as a baby’s bottom, Puggles Child Care Centre can look back on a successful decade of service in the Mid-Western region.

It was in the early stages of 2008 when Belinda Roberts and Melissa Craze kick-started their own child care centre and on Monday March 5, the sisters celebrated the centre’s tenth birthday.

Although they each work three days a week now, they had to slug it out for 10 hours a day and seven days a week when the centre first opened.

The property was built and is owned by Belinda and Mel’s parents which defines it as a family-owned centre.

“We’re here and available to the parents,” Roberts said.

“A lot of centres wouldn’t have the owners in as much as we are.”

Puggles has 46 places and the focus for child is to prepare them for school and beyond.

“Parents often talk about pre-school and getting kids ready for school,” she said.

“In this environment, the minute they walk through the front door we’re preparing them for school and life in general.

Puggles is making some minor changes to its back yard but outside that, the centre will continue to run as it has been for the last decade.

After all… if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

“We just want to keep up with traditional activities and go back to the basics,” she said.

“We’re not big on iPads and televisions in the room. The recommendation is that they don’t have any so unless we’ve had a rainy week, we steer away from technology.”
