This weekend’s Mudgee and District Relay For Life is set to be emotional for many, including team ‘Doing it for Dad’ family and friends of John Stanford – who sadly lost his battle with oesophagus cancer three months ago.

“The two-and-a-half years he fought cancer was like being on a roller coaster from hell. It is something I don’t wish upon anyone,” captain Kate Fisher said.
“While our grief is still raw and raising money for Cancer Council will not bring Dad back, hopefully it will save others from the heartache we are experiencing.
“Most of the team members have relayed before, when the Relay for Life was on two years ago, we attended with Dad. Attending this year without Dad is going to be very difficult but we feel that being apart of the relay is important and Dad would have wanted us to continue supporting it and raise as much money as we can.”
The team will be running an animal nursery at the Relay, featuring creatures to handle and take photos with.
They’ve already received generous support for their fundraising prior to Relay; donations to the Cancer Council were requested instead of floral tributes at Mr Stanford’s funeral; a family friend held a casual picnic lunch for a donation to attend; and two local hairdressers sold homemade brownies.
“A statistic that really alarms me is that one in two people will be diagnosed with cancer by the time they are 85,” Kate said.
“That’s you or me, that’s one of my children - it’s very scary. The thought of cancer devastating my family again is too much. But with a statistic like this you never know when it might strike.”
The 2018 Mudgee and District Relay For Life will be held from 10am, Saturday, April 7, at Victoria Park, Mudgee. More information at fundraising.cancer.org.au/mudgee2018 and at facebook.com/MudgeeRelayForLife
