Group 10 has sent a message to Western Women’s Rugby League rivals Group 11 via a thumping 58-12 final round victory over Castlereagh League at Gulgong.
Played at Bill Dunn Oval, the blue and whites raced in 10 tries and banged home nine goals to run into Saturday’s WWRL decider against Group 11 in red-hot form.
Bathurst Panthers ace Claire Woolmington bagged a hat-trick while Ella-J Harris, Amy Hewitt, Jess Hotham, Bridie McClure, Sarah Reyter, Lailee Phillips and Em McDonald all scored tries as well, the latter nailing six conversions to finish her side’s final road trip of the season with a tidy little haul of 16 points at Gulgong.
Regular goal-kicker Bec Ford managed three conversions in the win, too.
After Group 11 pushed Group 10 in the two sides’ round four clash at Parkes, it was thought the gap between runaway leaders Group 10 and the rest of the competition was closing.
Last Saturday’s result put that notion to bed.
The 2018 and inaugural WWRL deciders will be staged at Glen Willow this weekend and Group 10 coach Jordan Dwyer is confident his girls can get the job done at Mudgee – in both grades.
Group 10 is also through to the final of the WWRL under 18s premiership.
“The opens girls went well, they were comprehensive,” Dwyer said. “Our attack was great, we offloaded a fair bit and kept the ball alive.”
Although the under 18s suffered a 28-22 loss to a strong Castlereagh League juniors side, the margin against Group 10 wasn’t enough to push them out of second place on the ladder.
Group 11 finished the under 18s regular season as minor premiers and will head into the final as favourites.
But Dwyer, who doubles up and helps coach the under 18s as well, isn’t fazed by tags.
“We just need to stick to what’s gotten us this far,” he said of his group of under 18s.
“The girls have all the talent, it’s just a mental thing.
“Hopefully we can instill a bit of confidence in the girls ahead of the weekend and go up to Mudgee and give Group 11 a run, they’re a strong side though.”
As she’s done all year, Kiara Sullivan – the niece of Orange CYMS captain-coach Mick Sullivan – shone for the Group 10 girls at Gulgong.
In a beaten under 18s side, Sullivan scored three tries and booted three goals.
She’s the competition’s leading try-scorer with 13 in six games and has nailed 14 goals as well to boast 80 points for the season – more than double that of Taneka Todhunter from Group 11, Sullivan’s nearest rival.
The WWRL finals kick-off on Saturday afternoon, which will cap a massive day of rugby league at Glen Willow.
The CRL Women’s northern versus southern trial will kick-off the day with Group 10 girls Haylee Lepaio, Bec Ford, Ella-J Harris, Grace Mooney and Sally Dwyer all playing in the southern team at 10.45am.
They will all be named to back up for Group 10 at 4pm. The under 18s decider is scheduled to start at 3.10pm.
The finals of the Johns and Daley cups are in between the women’s games, kicking off at 12pm and 1.30pm respectively.
