Many parents, friends and relatives were in attendance across the three days of competition, and they all enjoyed and marvelled at the fine display of skill and sportsmanship exhibited by the young bowlers.
The first day’s play was the Singles’ Championships, and after the group stages, the sectional winners were Jono Davis (Dubbo Railway), James Robinson (West Dubbo), Tim Walsh (Nyngan), Logan Fraser (Dubbo Railway), Jordan Thompson (Gulgong), Jarrod Kohlenberg (Trangie), Tom Rich (Mudgee), Lachlan Thompson (Gulgong) and Tom Ashley (Trangie).
After more knockouts, the semi-finals came down to Jono Davis against Tim Walsh, and Tom Rich against Jordan Thompson. Jono Davis had a tough time against Tim Walsh, prevailing 25 – 21, and Jordan Thompson was too good for Tom Rich, winning 25 – 12. In the final, the champ really got going, and Jordan Thompson had no answers to the skills of Jono, going down 31 – 4.
Wednesday’s play was for the Pairs’ title, and the surprise packet was the young team of Cooper Dart and Zac Miller (West Dubbo). This pairing had the large crowd on their feet as they fought through the preliminary rounds and into the semi-finals, downing much older and more experienced players along the way. The other semi-finalists were Logan Fraser and Jono Davis (Dubbo Railway), Jordan Thompson Gulgong) and Tim Walsh (Nyngan), and Lachie Thompson (Gulgong) and Tom Rich (Mudgee).
Lachie Thompson and Tom Rich brought the run of Cooper Dart and Zac Miller to an end (14 – 9), and Jordan Thompson and Tim Walsh upset the favourites, Logan Fraser and Jono Davis, with their last bowl, winning 12 – 11. The final was also closely contested with Jordan Thompson and Walsh getting over Lachlan Thompson and Rich, 15 to 12.
On Thursday, the last day’s play was for the Fours’ Championships. In the semi-finals, the team of Lachie Thompson, Tom Rich, Leigh Brown and Jordan Thompson, was far too good for the Molong team of Jason Weekes, Brendon Peschka, Hayley Sharpe and Lachlan Wark. In the other semi, Zac Miller, Logan Fraser, Tim Walsh and Jono Davis had too many guns for the composite team of Tom Bowman (Coonabarabran), Jess Ball (West Dubbo), Zac Farr (Blayney) and Reece Robinson (Orange Country Club).
In the final, Jordan Thompson’s team was far too consistent for Jono Davis’s side, always being in command and running out winners 17 to 10.
The winners of each zone championship, Singles, Pairs and Fours, will then compete in the State Championships at Warilla in the winter holidays early July. Also, following the championships, the Zone 4 Seven-a-Side team will be selected for the State Championships to be held in August, again at Club Dubbo.
Following the championships, the Zone 4 Junior selectors came up with the squad from which to select and contest the State 7-a-Side Championships which included Tom Rich and Jordan and Lachlan Thompson.
