The match was played at a fast pace, although it was highlighted by a lot of dropped ball by both sides, something that was likely brought on by the night-time conditions.
The Batties had the upper hand for most of the match but weren’t able to deliver in the dying stages when they had possession just 10 metres out from the students’ try line, but relinquished the ball.
The narrative to emerge from this loss was similar to the ones before it – the forwards were strong but the boys fell short.
“We were certainly strong in the forwards for most of the game. That’s the way we wanted to play against CSU,” coach Greg Horton said.
“Our forwards dominated in the set play for at least three quarters of the game.”
The Wombats were in attacking position more than twice but were only able to register a pair of tries on the night. Horton put that down to lack of execution.
“There were several times where we were attacking and turned possession over and there were a few times where we flat out dropped the ball,” he said.
The loss couldn’t overshadow the excellent day Saturday was as proceedings kicked off with the juniors before the women and second division turned in great performances, setting the stage for first grade.
“It was a fantastic day. A lot of the old boys hung around and the club ran some fundraisers afterwards which was really succesful.”
