Before the 2018 Group 10 season started, Mudgee’s Tom Lawson was gearing up for a season playing for the Dragons’ first division side, while Jack Beasley had been appointed the premier league hooker.

However, after a host of injuries and some re-shuffling to the top tier side, Tom and Jack found themselves playing halfback and five eighth respectively – something they did throughout the majority of their junior careers.
Beasley knew he’d be given the chance the play with the Dragons’ best side in 2018 but Lawson thought he’d be coming off the bench for premier league while holding down a starting spot in the first division side.
“I thought an injury would be the only way I’d get into the starting side,” Lawson said.
“I just thought I’d be coming off the bench most of the year.
The Lawson-Beasley combination was suggested by Dragons’ coach Ben Gregory who moved Beasley from hooker and Lawson into the starting side, partly to give Jared Robinson the chance to return to fullback.
“It’s worked pretty well so far,” Lawson said.
“We only just lost to Oberon where we should of won and we beat St Pat’s.”
Although the premier league side suffered a loss to Cowra on Sunday, Beasley thinks the combination is improving ‘really quickly’.
It hasn’t been an overly tough transition for the pair to make as they both know each others game fairly well from juniors.
“We don’t overrule each other,” Lawson said.
“We look up and we know what’s on. We don’t abuse each other or abuse the hooker. We can see what needs to happen.”
Longevity is a key aspect of any good halves pairing and Tom and Jack are both set on remaining with the Dragons for the foreseeable future as they’ve both kick-started apprenticeships since finishing school.
“I don’t see any reason to move. We’re only young and we love it here,” Beasley said.
Every young rugby league player has an NRL idol or someone they like to shape their game around.
After moving from North Queensland when he was younger, Beasley drew inspiration from the likes of Matt Bowen and Jake Granville, while Lawson is a keen Manly supporter and keeps an eye on Daly Cherry-Evans on the weekends.
While an away game in round nine against the Hawks is a tough assignment for the boys, Lawson will tell you quickly, he and Jack don’t lack confidence.
