However, all is not what it seems going into Round 8 of the 2018 Christie and Hood Castlereagh League season.
The Terriers have managed to retain their spot at the top of the ladder – with a two point buffer from Gil – despite suffering their first loss of 2018 when they were run down by fifth placed Trangie at the Magpies’ nest.
But this was a mere blip compared to the Panthers’ recent form.
In Round 6 Dunedoo shocked the competition by giving Gil their first loss since 2016.
Then last weekend the Binnaway Bombshells - who only had one win in the season up until that point - beat the Panthers on their home patch. And in doing so secured the time-honoured Boronia Cup which had been in the Gilgandra trophy cabinet since 2016.
Binnaway - the side that the Terriers put away by a 72 point margin - came back from an 18-10 halftime deficit to beat the back-to-back defending premiers 42-28.
And the Gulgong side will be hoping to extend their misery this weekend and return themselves to the winner’s circle.
Castlereagh League Round 8 draw:
- Gulgong V Gilgandra;
- Baradine V Coonamble;
- Dunedoo V Cobar;
- Binnaway V Coonabarabran;
- Trangie bye.
LADDER: Gulgong 12, Gilgandra 10, Cobar 10, Dunedoo 10, Trangie 8, Binnaway 6, Coonamble 6, Baradine 6.
