Kevin Healey, of Stewart Street, Kandos, was sentenced to 200 hours community service, disqualified for 12 months, and fined $440, in Rylstone Local Court.
At about 1.45pm on September 21, 2017, the victim set up on the shoulder of the Sofala Road at Wiagdon (between Bathurst and Wattle Flat).
A short time later Healey stopped behind the camera vehicle and took the warning sign and the sandbag holding it in place.
He then pulled alongside the vehicle and threw the sandbag onto the roof.
The victim drove about 50 metres and began to dial triple zero when he saw Healey drive up to the rear of his car.
He attempted to flee but Healey kept following, stopping whenever the victim stopped, before pulling alongside him and throwing another object at his vehicle and taking off.
The 36-year-old was charged with; ‘Drive motor vehicle menaces another with intent’; ‘Larceny’; and ‘Intentionally throw object at vehicle risk safety’.
His solicitor, Peter Orr, told the court that his client “realises that not all people see the world the way he does” when it comes to mobile speed cameras.
And that he appreciates that the victim was a Roads and Maritime Services contractor and would’ve felt fear during the incident.
Magistrate Michael Allen said “I see this as reprehensible conduct” and pointed out that the victim “was just doing his job” and “doesn’t make the rules”.
He told Healey that when he’s performing his community service, “I hope you think ‘I’m here because of my stupid, dangerous behaviour that day’”.
