Councillor Thompson’s motion was backed by Councillor Esme Martens and Councillor Russell Holden, with Thompson leading the debate with claims that ‘a lot of locals’ ask him about a crematorium in the region and that council should be seeking guidance from local undertakers.
Thompson also bolstered his argument with a point about pets being brought to crematoriums, a comment that was sternly challenged by Councillor Peter Shelley.
“Human crematoriums are not used for pets,” Shelley said.
Shelley continued with his counter argument, expressing the small population of the Mid Western Region doesn’t ‘support it’.
Currently cremation services aren’t available in Mudgee, the closest crematorium services are in Dubbo, Bathurst and Orange.
Pet cremation services are available in Mudgee in a limited capacity.
