Liam’s parents, Emily and Damon Potts were gobsmacked when they received a call from radio hosts, Kyle and Jackie O informing them that their whole family would be going on an all expenses paid trip to Disneyland in Hong Kong.
Liam’s mum, Emily Potts almost missed the surprise when she made a sneaky trip home to get some rest.
“I’d come home from Ronald McDonald house and I got a call saying that there was a surprise waiting for the whole family that couldn’t be rescheduled you need to come back in at 7 o’clock in the morning, she said.

“I was a bit miffed, I was like ‘this is the only time I get to sleep in my own bed!’
“I travelled back that night and I got down to reception in the morning. We sat and waited for we didn’t know what, we were wondering like ‘what is going on?’
“I was playing with Liam beside the bed and all of a sudden I see these balloons come through the door and I was immediately speechless, it all happened so fast.
“I’m glad Liam was in a good mood, he has a bit of anxiety when there’s lots of people around.
“We spoke to Kyle and Jackie O on the phone and then ‘Intern Pete’ handed me a laminated card that just said ‘you’re going to Disneyland in Hong Kong.’ I was completely gobsmacked, I didn’t know what to say. I just started crying, it was amazing.’”
A friend indeed
Friend of Damon’s sister Shayna Potts, Leon Chay, was the one who took the opportunity to nominate the family for this experience.
“I’ve worked with Shayna for a few years but I don't personally know her sister’s family.
I have seen a lot of Facebook posts by Shayna and it had been heartbreaking but I didn't know how to help them as much as I wanted to, he said.
“One day at work an email came out from our company owner to ask for support for the family. I had heard a ‘Giveback’ segment on the radio around eight or more months ago which was about a little boy with cancer and it brought me to tears.
“That prompted me to go online and submit the entry. I felt it was such a worthy cause that Kyle and Jackie O might be able to help. So I put the producers onto Shayna when they called me.”
Leon was ecstatic when he picked up the phone one day and it was the producers from the ‘Kyle and Jackie O Show’.
“I was so excited for Liam and his family when Jaimee from KISS called. At that point it wasn't for sure that it would go to air,” Leon said.
‘We had to make it happen’
Damon’s sister, Shayna Potts told us how the whole surprise came to be.
“The show called me last Monday and I spoke to one of their producers about what could be done, I talked about all the fundraising we’ve been doing and the GoFundMe and everything, Shayna said.
“We discussed what they’d like to do if they were successful in their application. I said we’d like to do something with the family as a whole and spend more time together once Liam’s out of hospital.
“I said they were keen to go to Queensland and go to the theme parks there and they just said ‘what about Disneyland?’. I said that would be amazing, Liam is obsessed with everything Disney.
“The producers asked if I could come into the studio and have a chat with Kyle and Jackie O about everything and suddenly I was being interviewed live on air.
“We had no idea they were at the hospital, it was all such a surprise.”
Kyle & Jackie O Producer, Jaimee Hassos told the Mudgee Guardian how much Liam’s story affected the team.
“Both Kyle and Jackie really felt for the Potts family and wanted to help any way they could. They knew something like a trip to Hong Kong Disneyland would help bring so much joy to this family at a time they really needed it.
“So we had to make it happen and so grateful Steggles helped us do it,” Ms Hassos said.
‘We want to make memories’
Liam and his family thankfully don’t need to quickly organise passports, the ‘Kyle and Jackie O Show’ told Emily there is absolutely no rush to go just yet.
“We’re aiming to go in about a year. We want to get home and have him [Liam] rehabilitated properly. He doesn’t walk at the moment, as soon as he was admitted that was it, his bed was where he spent his time after that, Emily said.
“So we really need to get him walking so he can really enjoy himself, not only that he will be a bit older and can enjoy it even more.
“We’ve been blown away by the support from everybody, it’s truly been amazing. But getting to take our whole family overseas and to Disneyland is the best experience my kids will ever have.
“It’s what we wanted, to make memories. We said [are] going to be Liam’s ‘Make-A-Wish.”
