Mudgee Chamber of Commerce’s (MCC) recent initiative to boost local business is going from strength to strength. Late last year the MCC was looking for ways to counter the amount of money that was being spent out of town and keep the cash flowing through the local businesses’ tills, boosting the Mudgee economy.

And so, the Mudgee Money initiative was born.

“There was too much spending going out of town,” MCC president Greg Dowker said. “And Mudgee’s businesses needed to reclaim some of it. This initiative means more money will stay in town.”

Mudgee Money is a gift card program which locks dollars into being spent at participating stores, encouraging more people to shop local in the Mid Western Region. The MCC believes that even a small boost to local business coffers would be greatly beneficial to the whole Mudgee community.

“Increasing spending in our Mid Western Region by just two per cent per year it would create 23 additional jobs and generate $4 million dollars in additional economic value to the region,” the MCC website states.

Mr Dowker is pleased with the initiative’s early figures, saying it is not a bad effort for a scheme which only kicked off last November.

“In not a long period of time we have have already had around $38,000 put on these cards. That means there is $38,000 which is kept in town,” he said. “Now, any small business in town would love to have $1000 of that going through their till.

“We really didn’t know how the Mudgee Money idea would take off. And it has only been eight months, so that's [$38,000] a good little earner for local businesses to have, rather than the money going out of town.

“People are now recognising that the benefits of Mudgee Money are twofold: the gift cards are doing good for town and people are appreciating what businesses we have in town.”

Currently there are 54 stores which welcome the Mudgee Money gift cards, from a café in Rylstone to a clothing store or restaurant in Mudgee. Businesses and corporate companies can also hand out gift cards to their staff and people can buy the gift cards to give to friends and family as a gift.
