That was the Gulgong Terriers’ completion rate in their major semi final against the Gilgandra Panthers on Saturday, a deplorable 32 percent.
And yep, you guessed it… that was one of the major reasons why the minor premiers fell to Gil 26-12 and relinquished the opportunity to host a Castlereagh League grand final.
But it’s not all doom and gloom for Mark Gorrie’s men. The Terriers will have a chance to set up their fourth meeting of the season against Gilgandra in a preliminary final on Saturday at Billy Dunn Oval against the Dunedoo Swans.
But one thing’s for sure, if Gulgong doesn’t clean up its completion rate and discipline, it might find itself finishing the 2018 campaign in third place.
“There were 20 penalties given against us in the game and that comes down to discipline,” Gulgong coach Mark Gorrie said.
“The referees do a good job of controlling the game as best they can. Those penalties were given on merit.
“They had a lot more football than us and we had to do a lot more tackling.”
Gulgong will look to make it three from three against the Swans as the Terriers have made a habit of getting it over the Mid-Western rivals.
Regardless of the results between the two sides, there’s no love lost in a local derby and Gorrie expects it to be a ‘tough’ game.
“We didn’t take our opportunities to spread the ball wide against Gilgandra and we’ve got a very good backline,” he said.
“We didn’t utilize our key people and this weekend against Dunedoo we need to take advantage of opportunities and make the right decisions.”
There’s no doubt the loss against Gilgandra was a tough one to swallow, but Gorrie’s proud his boys gave themselves the best opportunity to secure a home grand final.
“We gave ourselves an excellent opportunity to do it and we were confident we’d be able to beat them,” Gorrie.
“That was one of our goals at the start of the season.
“We played one of those games that every coach dreads. Nothing went our way.
“We only had the football 14 times in the second half. Everyone walked off the field disappointed in the way that the game panned out.
“Nobody left anything in the sheds but just the way the game went, left everyone upset. The mental position of the boys after the game right through until training was a lot of disappointed but everyone’s in a positive mind frame ahead of this weekend.”
Gulgong kicks off its preliminary final against Dunedoo at 1.30pm from Billy Dunn Oval and Gorrie hopes the fans can continue to show the ‘tremendous’ support and dedication they have all season.
