Brigades across the district have planned a number of events [SEE BELOW] to assist locals to prepare their homes and properties for the Bush Fire Danger Period, which began on September 1.
“All residents in our area need to be prepared for the bush fire season,” said Superintendent Troy Porter of the NSW RFS, Cudgegong District, which covers the Mid Western Regional Council area.
“It has already been a busy start to the fire season with more than 2000 bush and grass fires across NSW during August.
“All of NSW is in drought and with a forecast of ongoing warm and dry conditions, there is the potential for a long and protracted bush fire season. That’s why it’s so important for you to get your family, your home and your property ready now.
“NSW RFS members have been busy preparing by undertaking hazard reduction burns, maintaining firefighting equipment and undergoing training.”
Get Ready Weekend is a chance for residents to do their bit to prepare and protect their family and property in the event of a fire.
Even little things can make a big difference, like trimming overhanging trees and shrubs, mowing and removing cut grass and removing debris and leaves from gutters and around your home.
It could also be as simple as talking to your family about what you would do if a bush fire was to start near them. Get Ready Weekend on September 22-23 is the ideal opportunity to take that action.
“Over the next couple of weekends volunteer firefighters will be available at activities throughout the district to talk about the simple things you can do to reduce your bush fire risk,” Superintendent Porter said.
