Each day students had cycling, swimming and running training sessions paired with dietary learnings.
Those participating had to budget, shop, prepare and cook their own meals every day.
Tri NSW Coach and Athlete Pathway Manager Mick Delamotte, says learning about fueling their body is an important aspect of the camp.
“This was a big part of their learning and development, and it showed a level of independence required so they can have the skills to have adequate nutrition to fuel their body.”
Throughout the duration of the camp, Delamotte says there was one moto that prevailed.
“Thrive, not survive.”
“Everyone had to get their adequate eight plus hours sleep and keep hydrated.”
“They had to monitor and control so they had to make the right decision in that regard.”
Three Mudgee students took part in the camp alongside some of the best under 19 triathletes in Australia, and gave off a great impression to Delamotte.
“What I particularly got out of it was that they challenged themselves so they were often put in situations that were well out of their comfort zones but they voluntarily took on those challenges and did a really good job.”
“They did a really good job in problem solving situations they were in, in managing the challenges and emotions that come with it.”
“The weather wasn’t fantastic so we were often riding in poor conditions so some days that was uncomfortable but being uncomfortable turned into being a challenge and that turned into being a really fun, rewarding experience for them.”
Delamotte says despite having the ability to go anywhere in Australia, there’s no place he would rather be than Mudgee as the camp is welcomed in arms and have ideal training facilities.
“It is important to recognise the support we get from the local community and the fact that Mudgee as a town and their facilities are ideal for us.”
“Mudgee is a fantastic town with the local community who really support what we do which is great.”
We could choose anywhere to go in the state, or in the country mind you, but we choose to come to Mudgee and we choose to come here for very good reasons.
- Mick Delamotte
The camp was held from October 1 to 6, 2018.
“We will be back for sure.”
