A group of friends visiting Mudgee from Sydney, led by Bruce Searles, were delighted to discover much more than anticipated.
Like most Australians and racing enthusiasts around the world they view the Melbourne Cup as an annual elitist event on the racing calendar and excuse to take time off, relax with friends and have a flutter on the Cup.
Before coming to Mudgee Bruce and his friends had already decided to support the 'Buy a Bale' initiative and more than $1,800 was raised during the afternoon by the group.
Like many in big cities they understand the importance of a healthy farm sector and damage caused by prolonged drought. And they were overwhelmed by the generosity of those who dug deep to support drought stricken farmers.
With support from Gooree Park organisers and MC, local identity Ken Sutcliffe, participants were encouraged to give to this worthy cause. Local farmers on one table joined others from Newcastle, Sydney, Mudgee and further afield to assist.
A coach load of retirees who travelled from Fern Bay, Newcastle were prominent and their leader was so taken that she was back for her fourth Cup.
The Aussie spirit of mateship and lending a helping hand, as well as enjoying a good time, was alive and well on Cup day.
