Western Zone will almost completely be relying on Dubbo and Bathurst young guns at the Country Cricket NSW Colts Championship, with the two associations accounting for all but two spots in the squad for next month’s tournament at Narrabri.

Selectors named their 13-strong squad on Tuesday following last weekend’s carnival at Orange’s Jack Brabham Park, which the Corey McDean-led Chairman’s XI won somewhat against the odds considering they were a composite outfit.
McDean will take Western’s reins as a result while Mudgee’s Cody Lawson also got the nod from that outfit, with Dubbo and Bathurst stars filling the remainder of the squad after their sides finished second and third, respectively.
Bathurst’s Nic Broes, Ben Mitchell, Tanvir Singh, Mitch Taylor, Ethan Ivory and Martin Rudgley were all picked while Dubbo’s Ben Wheeler, Tom Atlee and Jake Setree were named from last weekend’s carnival too.
Brock Larance and Henry Railz, both from Dubbo, also got the nod too despite not playing at Orange last weekend. However both are incumbents and have played for the senior side and the latter was playing in Sydney last weekend, their places were considered guaranteed regardless.
The Dubbo and Bathurst dominance isn’t a surprising move from selectors, while the Chairman’s XI triumphed they did so with a well-rounded, team effort. Simply, the individual performances of the selected Dubbo and Bathurst stars were impossible to ignore.
Atlee, Setree, Wheeler, Broes and Mitchell all passed 50 at Jack Brabham while Singh pummelled 132 on Sunday’s second day, and of the bowlers Taylor was the only one to go through the carnival wicketless.
But club, district and even school performances were also taken into account and Western coach Garth Dean, from Bathurst, is certain selectors have got the mix right.
“It’s exciting to take a group like that away. Hopefully they can all perform well at the same time through the week,” he said, the side’s somewhat youthful nature a positive for him too.
“There are guys in this team with another year to go, like Ben Mitchell and Brock Larance.
“We have an excellent squad but they’ve got to perform together as a team through the whole week. You can have a team full of champions but you’ve got to perform.”
McDean, Atlee, Larance, Railz and Broes all played in Western’s 2017-18 campaign, one they won just one game in and will be looking to improve upon.
Western face Central Northern, ACT and Riverina in 50-over, one-day games and will also play Newcastle and Central Coast in Twenty20 encounters at Narrabri.
“We have Central Northern on the first day – the home team. They’ve already named their team so obviously they’ve been preparing for a while. That will be a really good test for us,” Dean said.
“If we come out of that game well then we know we’re going to be there, or thereabouts.
Western’s coach also went on to laud last weekend's carnival, which returned this summer after a hiatus. In the past it was played as an Inter-Council affair between Mitchell, Macquarie and Lachlan.
“The Colts Carnival was a good concept which we’re probably going to hang onto now. Getting the best colts players from across the region playing against one another makes the selection process more valid,” he said.
“There’s probably one or two players who have won a spot who may not have done so without this carnival. It’s a great concept we’d like to lock in for around this time each year.”
After being beaten on both days last weekend and not having any real standouts individually, no Orange players were selected. Although he didn’t play for the Baby Bluebaggers 15-year-old Blake Weymouth was considered a chance by many based on his blistering early-season form, but wasn’t given the nod.
The Country Cricket NSW Colts Championship runs from December 17-20.
