The 2018 installment of the Mudgee Cup received a total of 181 nominations across all races, with 25 horses put forth for the 2018 Robert Oatley Vineyards Mudgee Cup showcase (1600 metres), and 21 for the Wild Oates Mudgee Cup day sprint showcase (1200 metres).
With a somewhat different atmosphere expected on the day following the passing of highly respected Mudgee-based trainer, Max Crockett, Mudgee Race Club volunteer secretary, Colleen Walker says the day will undoubtedly honour “such a gentleman.”
“I believe that in some ways it’ll be quite sad because of the realisation that Max [Crockett] won’t be here but they will just honour the racing because he was such an honourable man and people will watch the cup in honour of such a gentleman,” she said.
With race goers from all over expected to make an appearance at the highly social event, the buzz is unavoidable.
“It’ll be very flat out, the Fashion on the Field will be highly contested, and you can already feel the buzz in town,” Ms Walker said.
It is a very big social event, and the biggest horse racing event in our calendar.

With Weather Zone predicting a top of 31 degrees on the day, Walker says race goers will be feeling the heat, encouraging protective measures to be put in place.
“We will put as much shade and seating up as we can for the people’s comfort so they can enjoy the day,” Ms Walker said.
The Mudgee Cup will be held on Friday, December 7, with gates opening at 11am.
Everybody is welcome to come and enjoy the great day.
