Earlier this year, six Blue decided to combine persuasive texts with setting up a School Vegetable Garden. The students wrote letters to a variety of businesses around Gulgong and Mudgee and the three local mines. In response we were able to gain sponsorship to build our garden. Mr Lewis approved our plans and we were able to finally begin the build in early term four. With a willing army of student workers and some parent expertise the garden took shape. The boys even dug all the fence post holes by hand and learned how to cement them in (we had a few blisters for the next few days). We then had some wonderful parents and friends donate a second batch of plants which we planted and used a large bird-net in an attempt to keep off the hungry birds. Luckily the birds didn’t eat all of our second offerings, and we have managed to keep some of our tomatoes, our capsicum, one lone surviving beetroot, the mint, the basil, the eggplant and most of our strawberry plants. Last Tuesday, we hosted a Thank-you Morning Tea for all our sponsors, parent helpers and students. The students and their parents provided a sumptuous feast for everyone. Our major sponsors were delighted with the efforts we have put in to the garden, with promises to continue their support into the future. Our new purchases have arrived and we are now in the process of putting up a shade sail, a larger bird-net, using the existing netting to put around the fenceline, digging and cementing in five poles, planting two fruit trees outside the front gate and generally doing what we need to maintain what we have achieved.
