Deirdre doesn’t have a car at the moment, so she’s decided to let someone else enjoy the plate she’s paid for for 34 years.

In 1965, when Deirdre Franklin was 27 years old, she was left money in the will of a beloved family friend, Mrs Naughton, otherwise lovingly referred to as ‘Naught’ through her childhood.

This allowed her to replace her old car at the time, a Hillman with a newer Honda, and she decided to get the plate in memory of ‘Naught’.

Deirdre recalls her childhood growing up with Mrs Naughton in Sydney.

“She used to be secretary to Jules Joris who was a diamond merchant, my mother's wedding ring came from him and so on,” Deirdre said.

“Mrs Naughton loved children and she liked us too, my cousins and my sister and I, for every Christmas we’d get 10 shillings and a beautifully embroidered handkerchief with your initial on it,”

“She was part of our family for a long time as she was getting older and moved to a retirement village which just happened to be next to the school I went to – Wenona in North Sydney,”

“When she died, everything was there, you didn’t have to go to lawyers and say ‘what’s this?’ it was all organised and she left things in her will to my two cousins, my sister and I,”

“Out of that I was able to change my old car and get a new car and that’s when I decided to one day get the license plate as a way to remember her in a way.”

Despite the sweet sentiment behind the plate, Deirdre says people often think the plate means something else.

“Well lots of people say it means ‘naughty!’ oh yes lots of people ask what it means.” Deirdre said.

Deirdre has placed the ad for the license plate in the Mudgee Guardian which you can view in print and online, though she isn’t sure how much it could be worth.

“There’s something called Mr Plates and they seem to get quite a few, $20,000-$30,000, quite a lot for some of these plates,”

“So I suppose I’m open to offers in a way, but that’s the only way I could do it I think, it’s just a stab in the dark. I’ll see what I can get.”
