The well-known local identity was completing track work on Tuesday morning when the incident occurred.
“Brett had completed riding trackwork on a young two-year-old, but was then dislodged after his mount lunged forward while he was preparing to dismount,” a statement by Racing NSW said.
“Brett was taken to Mudgee Hospital and reports he suffered a broken tibia.”
Racing NSW said Mr Thompson was now waiting to see a specialist and had been advised to keep his broken right leg on ice and elevated until then.
Mr Thompson is one of the Central West’s top trainers and he has 90 horses in his Gulgong stables.
He will have two horses race in Gilgandra this Saturday and at least three horses due to race in Dubbo on Sunday.
Mr Thompson’s most significant recent win was with Sugar Dance which took out the Gilgandra Town Plate on January 6.
