Thirty years ago, the founder of Clean Up Australia and former Australian of the Year, Ian Kiernan AO, started is crusade against rubbish when he predicted that plastic would be the problem of our generation.
And with Australians addiction to plastics and pre-packaged goods Clean Up Australia is even more important than its ever been.
Three decades ago Australians created around 450 kg of rubbish per person per year, today this is more than 2,700 kgs starting the day we are born.
Schools run their own Clean Up on Friday, March 1 and youth and community groups take to their streets over the weekend of March 2-3.
During the history of Clean Up Australia - the largest community mobilisation event of its kind - volunteers have donated more than 33 million hours, at over 178,000 locations across the country.
Together they have removed the equivalent of 350 thousand ute loads of rubbish across Australia.
You can also donate to the organisation online, with one-hundred per cent of the money raised through donation is allocated to the purchase of materials provided free of charge to community, school and youth groups across the nation.
“So whether you are going to make a donation or get together to clean up your local environment –change starts with you,” managing director of Clean Up Australia Terrie-Ann Johnson said.
"The key to success is stopping litter becoming rubbish. There are so many actions every one of us can take to help reduce the 8 million tonnes of plastic entering our oceans worldwide each year.
“So why not book-mark today in your journey and join us for a 2019 Clean Up.”
