With cricket in the area said to have been in a decline for a number of years, teams likely to merge if all goes ahead will be Gulgong, Goolma, Mudgee, Coolah and possibly Wellington.
A press release sent out by Gulgong Cricket invites people who have had prior or current involvement in cricket in the area or anyone of interest to attend.
“Cricket as a sport in our area has been in decline for many years and this, we hope, will be the first step to re-invigorating it,” read the press release.
Points to be discussed at the meeting include:1
- Combined 40 over Saturday afternoon senior competition with Gulgong, Goolma, Mudgee, Coolah and possibly Wellington
- T20 stand alone competition Friday nights under lights held in Mudgee, Gulgong and possibly Coolah
- Modified draw to reduce travelling for clubs with Mudgee based teams not having to travel further than Goolma, and Coolah and Wellington based teams not having to travel to Mudgee
Gulgong Cricket spokesperson Jeff Rayner says the aim of the proposed formation of a new competition is to boost numbers and create more enthusiasm for cricket across the region.
“The main push for a combined competition has come from the continued decline in participation rates in both of our regional competitions,” Rayner said.

"We [Gulgong Cricket] are hoping to achieve a renewed enthusiasm for cricket in the area by offering more teams for clubs to play against and hopefully this will result in a stronger competition in the area which in turn we hope will strengthen the quality of cricket.
My personal opinion is that it is vital for cricket in the area. It is a situation that is being played out all over country NSW and isn’t just confined to our area.
The meeting will be held on Sunday March 24 at the Gulgong RSL Club commencing at 12pm.
