trust them to guide you through
and hold a light when challenge
comes looking for a clue.
Christmas trees and Santa Claus,
dinners round the table,
cricket in the back yard played
while you're fit and able.
Billy Tea and Damper spread
with golden Cocky's Joy,
camp fires come to life again
like I was just a boy.
Remember how yesterday
brought us here today,
giving us directions now
to lead us on our way.
When tomorrow's dawn is light,
today will be our past,
memories will be relived
on how our lives were cast.
Simple days of back yard fun
when we had time to play,
taught us to value friendship
of those now turning grey.
Pocket money, paper rounds
or marbles in the ring,
bicycles and billy carts
of nuts and bolts and string.
First job and a car as well
when right and wrong were clear,
guidance of the boss with words
was something you should hear.
Manners made the perfect man,
an adage of the day
and ladies waltzed in ball gowns-
there was no other way.
Never let the old ways go
for they will shed a light
and point the way so quickly
when clouds have blurred your sight.
