Paramedics from Bathurst ambulance station, who were literally metres from the crash, rushed to render assistance just seconds after hearing the collision but nothing could be done to help the man who sustained fatal injuries in the incident.
Shocked witnesses looked on as police and other emergency services arrived, helpless to do anything in the tragic circumstances.
Chifley Local Area Command duty officer Inspector Gerard Powell said emergency services were called to the intersection of William Street and Durham Street, Bathurst about 12.10pm following reports a pedestrian had been struck by a truck.
He said the pedestrian, a 33-year-old man who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.
Inspector Powell said the driver of the truck, a 49-year-old man, was taken to Bathurst Base Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.
Following the incident the intersection was locked down by police who established a crime scene in the area, with only one eastbound lane continuing to operate.
NSW Ambulance zone manager Superintendent Brad Porter talks about the incident
Traffic diversions were put in place for all westbound traffic.
Inspector Powell said officers from the Forensic Services Group were called to the crash and investigations into the circumstances were under way.
He said a report would be prepared for the information of the coroner.
NSW Ambulance zone manager Superintendent Brad Porter said paramedics responded within seconds of the crash.
"We were confronted with a pedestrian hit by what we now know is a truck," he said.
He said officers heard the collision and were on the scene as the first Triple-0 calls came through.
"We responded within seconds but there was nothing that could be done."
He said an emergency services chaplain also responded to the scene offering support to bystanders who witnessed the incident, as well as offering support to police, paramedics and firies who attended the crash.
Police, who are reviewing CCTV footage of the crash from nearby businesses, appealed to any witnesses that have not yet spoken to officers to come forward.
