Fire and Rescue NSW Mudgee crews received the triple-0 call out at 10.50pm on Tuesday with reports that a home on Paterson Street was alight.
"The house was fully engulfed at the time we arrived," brigade Captain Mark Collins said.
"Flames had protruded through the roof space and one of the hazards that we faced was that the roof could collapse.
"We had to fight the fire defensively, from outside the house, given some of the issues we had with power still on at the home."
Captain Collins said the residents were not at home at the time the fire ignited.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene, however, Captain Collins said there were no injuries to firefighters or neighbours.
In the initial stages of fighting the fire, crews feared it may spread to a neighbouring property.
"Initially we protected an adjacent house until we got it under control," Captain Collins said.
"Our crews did an extremely good job and we had Essential Energy come out to turn off the power [to the house].
"The house was totally destroyed by fire.
Captain Collins has urged all residents to ensure that they have a working smoke alarm in their properties so it can alert them to a fire in its initial stages.
He was unsure if this property was fitted with a smoke alarm as the blaze was so involved upon arrival of firefighters.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and is now in the hands of NSW Police.
