Anyone cruising around the Central West and the historic villages last weekend may be excused for thinking that they've driven through a time tunnel. Cars that are almost as old as some of the buildings in places like Millthorpe, Carcoar and Rylstone, will be touring the district as part of a special bi-annual tour. The Autumn Tour is organised every two years by the Orange District Antique Motor Club, with 130 vintage and veteran cars coming from across the country to take to the roads on Friday and Saturday. With the rally specifically for cars manufactured before 1931, director Peter Amos said it would be a great opportunity to catch some rare classics of the road. Also, seventy luxury Mercedes Benz cars and 150 representatives from the Queensland, NSW and Victorian Mercedes Benz Clubs will be at Dundullimal Homestead, Dubbo. The original rally was held in Dubbo so the organisers thought it apt to return for the anniversary. Many fine Mercedes stopped for lunch in Rylstone.

Kandos Museum has Colourful Trade Union Banners
Banner Bright: An exhibition of Trade Union banners from Sydney Trades Hall is on at Kandos Museum from May 1 to June 30 2019
The Sydney Trades Hall banner collection is of national significance and it is a rare opportunity to see original as well as reproductions of many of these banners in Kandos. The largest section of the Sydney Trades Hall collection is of banners dating from 1890 to 1920 and represent many trades and occupations. The unions which formed around these occupations took pride in representing their work and skill on the large "sails" they got out once or twice a year for street marches and celebrations.
The main banner painters were Edgar Whitbread, a member of the Painters and Decorators Union, which made such banners as the Builder's Labourers Federation and the Eight Hour Day banner. In addition, an extensive history display has been assembled to commemorate the 1917 General Strike in NSW. The strike began in Randwick Tramway Workshops and at Eveleigh Rail workshops, but quickly spread throughout Sydney and regional NSW. Bathurst was a main focus of activity with Ben Chifley, later Prime Minister, a leader of the rail workers there. He later said that he entered politics following the massive injustices he saw at the time.
Kandos Museum, in a town with such a strong industrial past, thanks Sydney Trades Hall for this inspirational exhibition.

Bush Croquet at Ferntree Gully Reserve
A beautiful day in a stunning bushland reserve suitable for picnics, bushwalking, photography, bird watching and observing native plants was the site for this year's Bush Croquet contest. About 40 contestants set off with eight players in each heat. The players hit croquet balls about 30 metres away through a wire hoop, then set off for the next hoop over, under and around logs and trees. The course is extremely difficult creating lots of 'Oohs, arghs and laughs ' from spectators. All money raised goes towards the upkeep of the Ferntree Gully Reserve.
Maintenance is needed to keep the tracks around the gully walks clear for visitors. If you would like to become an environmentally interested volunteer, contact; The Secretary, Ferntree Gully Reserve Land Manager, PO Box 162, Rylstone, NSW 2849 or badgerground@bigpond.com.
