Mid-Western Regional Council voted unanimously to support the petition that the Bylong Valley Way become a State Road and to write a letter of support with relevant information pertaining to the condition and requirements of the road.

The motion was put to their extraordinary meeting on May 6 by Cr Peter Shelley, who said "the time to make the Bylong Valley Way a state road is now".

"We're spending approximately $600,000 a year on the maintenance of the Bylong Valley Way and it's progressively getting worse," he said. "And unless we get a massive influx of money into this road, which this council and community cannot afford, it's just going to get worse.
"It's horrendous the amount of accidents that happen on the Bylong Valley Way considering that it is a tourist route and transport corridor.
One of our local members is now the Minister for Roads, which is Paul Toole, and we've also got support from our MP in the Upper Hunter Michael Johnsen - so now is the time to do it."
