And while Western may have won the game 1-0, they could've increased their winning margin if several opportunities didn't go begging in the first half.
But it was a mixed day for Western, as the side suffered a 2-0 defeat and 3-0 lose to South Coast and North Coast respectively.
Regardless, coach Gary Jones was pleased with his team's performance on the opening day of action.
"That was a good result because I said to the boys, 'That'll make a difference for where we finish because tomorrow is going to be hard'," he said.
"We had two good first halves to start the game, at nil-all in both of them. We were 1-0 at half-time in the third one and we needed to put two good halves together and did that time.
"Considering they've only been together since 1pm [Monday], I'm really pleased with their efforts in all three games."
Played in chilly conditions on Proctor Park's main field, Western's first chance against North West came within two minutes.
North West goalkeeper Mason Louis went to clear the ball but it fell into the path of Western's Gus Lewis.
Lewis' shot hit the post and it came bouncing up, the Cudal Primary School student lucky not to break the deadlock.
And 12 minutes into the game, Lewis had another chance. He was one-on-one with Louis, but he placed it wide and the scores remained locked at nil-all.
But the opener came just two minutes later when Archie Clulow, of Mudgee Primary School, beat several North West players and put it pass the hands of Louis, giving Western a 1-0 lead.
North West best chance came with one of the last kicks of the first-half, but Western goalkeeper Thomas Blowes pushed Jared Frost's effort wide.
Chances were rare in the second half, as the tiredness seem to take affect, as both teams were playing their third game of the day.
Action continues at the carnival on Wednesday and Thursday.
